From the instructors

What each of us teaches you

You shoot with each of us across the day, in small rotating groups. Daniel and Stuss read the same streets from different angles. Here is what each one will work on with you.

Daniel Rachamim

Documentary · humanity

Daniel works documentary-first. Expect close-in time on faces and moments, on how to approach strangers without breaking what you are trying to capture, on reading a scene before pressing the button. He pushes you to engage rather than observe from a distance. Most of your rotation with him is on the street, working in pairs or alone with feedback in real time.

Stuss Helder

Beyond the Obvious · atmosphere

Stuss teaches the Beyond the Obvious method, a deliberate way of seeing past the first read of a scene. Expect work on reflections, geometric layering and atmospheric depth, treating one location as a place that holds multiple frames. The focus is methodical: building a visual language that holds together across an edit, not chasing single hero shots.

The day

Hour by hour

The structure is built around getting full time with both instructors. The morning is theory, the afternoon is hands-on practice on the street. You rotate halfway through so every participant shoots with Daniel and with Stuss, close by but in separate spots.

Theory in venue covers

Daniel

  • Street portraiture and approaching people, using natural light to our advantage
  • Black and white or colour, understanding why and when to use each
  • Understanding who we are as photographers and what draws us to certain images

Stuss

  • The Beyond the Obvious method
  • Reflections, geometric layering and composition
  • Building stronger photographic series and a coherent visual language
  1. 10:00 – 12:00

    Theory in venue

Two hours indoors with both instructors. We cover approaches, methods and frames of reference before we head out to shoot.

  2. 12:00 – 12:30

    Lunch

Half an hour around the venue. Brussels has options on every corner.

  3. 12:30 – 14:30

    Rotation one

Group A works on the street with Daniel. Group B works on the street with Stuss. Participants photograph in specially chosen urban environments while receiving live feedback and hands-on guidance throughout the session. Small groups allow for close interaction, helping participants sharpen observation, timing and instinct in the field. During the second half of the day, groups switch instructors to experience a different perspective and rhythm of working.

  4. 14:30 – 15:00

    Coffee and switch

A pause somewhere calm in the city, a park or quiet corner with a coffee place, toilets and refreshments nearby. Time to regroup before groups swap.

  5. 15:00 – 17:00

    Rotation two

Groups swap. You spend the second half of the day shooting with the other instructor.

  6. 17:00 – 18:00

    Recap and next steps

We regroup somewhere in the city to exchange impressions from the day, what we noticed, what to chase. Daniel and Stuss brief the two-week assignment, set expectations for the video call critique and answer anything still open before we close.

  7. Two weeks later

    Group video call critique

Two weeks on, we jump back on a video call together. Bring five or six images from the day and the weeks since, and talk us through why those ones. We react, the group joins in, the day comes into focus. This is where the masterclass finishes, one last evening with everyone.

Who it's for

Two starting points, your own signature

Whatever your level, the day asks the same of you: get close, engage and shoot with intent. We don't teach the camera from zero and we don't hand out formulas. Where you start shapes what we work on with you, never whether you belong.

First time

If photography is still new to you, the masterclass meets you where you are. The starting point is comfort with your camera and its basic settings. From there, we work on what to look for, when to press the button and how small choices in the moment begin to shape something recognisably yours.

Experienced

If you have been shooting for years, the masterclass works as a deliberate disruption. Familiar habits become visible when someone else is watching the same scene. The aim is to sharpen attention, question first instincts and develop a visual language that holds together across an edit, not just in single frames.

What you'll leave with

By the end of the day

One day on the street with both of us, then a fortnight to put it into practice. Here is what you take home.

  • Approach strangers on the street without breaking the moment you are trying to catch
  • Read a scene and anticipate the frame before you raise the camera
  • Use reflections, layering and atmosphere to find the second image inside the first
  • Build a series that holds together across an edit, not just single hero shots
  • See your own choices more clearly, the first step to a signature that is yours

Frequently asked questions

Before you book

Who is this for?
Anyone serious about street photography, from first-timers comfortable with their camera's basics to photographers with years behind them. Where you start shapes what we focus on with you, not whether you belong.
What camera do I need?
Your own, whatever it is. A DSLR, a mirrorless or an advanced smartphone all work. Bring a spare battery and a memory card.
How much walking is there?
The afternoon is spent on the street, on foot. Wear comfortable shoes. We keep a steady pace with breaks along the way.
What if it rains?
We shoot anyway. The street does not stop for weather and neither does the work. Some of the strongest frames come out of it.
Is lunch included?
Coffee and small refreshments are. Lunch is a short break to grab something nearby, on your own.
Can I get a refund?
Tickets are non-refundable and tied to this masterclass, but you can transfer your place to another person at no charge. In exceptional circumstances, like serious illness, email us directly and we'll sort it out.
Is the video call critique part of the masterclass?
Yes. It is the session two weeks on where the work comes together and the masterclass finishes, not an add-on. We pick a date that suits the group.
